Bonham Ranch has a registered Angus cowherd that dates back over 70 years. The Angus cows are well adapted to the hot, humid weather of Colorado County and South Texas. We both naturally breed and AI our cows through a 65-day breeding season to produce calves born in the fall of the year. We have 18 month old bulls for sale annually in the spring. The bulls will be up to date on vaccinations and have passed a breeding soundness exam at the time of sale. The ranch offers replacement heifers and select cows for sale on a limited basis.

Cattle

The Bonham Ranch cow herd stems from E.M. Holt’s legacy of over 70 years of breeding registered Angus cows. We strive to raise well-adapted, commercially demanded cattle with longevity and quality appearance. Our cows calve in the fall over a 65-day season. This allows us to provide our predominantly spring calving commercial bull customers with 18-month-old bulls ready for sale by private treaty in the spring of each year. All sale bulls will have passed a breeding soundness evaluation and will be current on vaccinations and de-worming.

Wildlife

The Bonham Ranch is a charter member of Harvey Creek Wildlife Management Association. In 2001, Harvey Creek WMA was selected by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as the outstanding Wildlife Co-op of the year. Harvey Creek WMA also received the prestigious Lone Star Land Steward Award from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in recognition of their stewardship efforts.  The Bonham Ranch works closely with the senior wildlife biologist in Colorado county to improve the health and diversity of our habitat and wildlife populations.

The Bonham Foundation is focused on improving wildlife habitat for all animals that inhabit the Bonham Ranch. We have recently improved upland game bird habitat for Northern Bobwhite Quail, Rio Grande Turkey, and Mourning Dove through native grass reintroduction. We also manage our whitetail deer herd through hunting in partnership with the Harvey Creek Wildlife Management Association.
We utilize planned, adaptive rotational grazing to promote soil health and regenerate our native grasslands. We work closely with the Texas Grazing Land Coalition to better utilize our forages and promote proper stocking rates and rotational grazing to other producers. With proper timing of grazing, rest, and planning, the cattle can help maintain and promote quality habitat for wildlife species as well.

Grazing

Our goals include improving our soil health and regenerating our native plant species. Through managed grazing, cattle are able to play an important role in helping to control brush and replenish valuable nutrients. By dividing some of our larger pastures into much smaller ones, we are better able to facilitate rotational grazing and provide adequate recovery between grazing events. We are members of the Coastal Prairie Grazing Land Coalition (Texas Grazing Land Coalition). We are working with a rangeland management specialist with the Natural Resource Conservation Service to help us continually improve the health of our rangelands.
